Matisyahu Shined On

The last time I was at Stubb’s BBQ was for a SXSW event. So needless to say, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen someone play there. That took care of itself last night as I had the pleasure of seeing Matisyahu perform in his now non-Hasidic way. So was the new, lock less, improved Matisyahu still worthy of a great show? Did backing band Dirty Heads warm up the crowd enough? Let’s shed some light on the situation. Continue reading Matisyahu Shined On

Dia De Los Toadies 2012: Wet Rocks

Yes, after the initiation last year, it was the second time around for me and Dia De Los Toadies.  This time around, I not only got to see Mariachi El Bronx again, but I can now knock off Helmet from my bucket list.  Another new twist this year was that I got to float the Guadalupe River beforehand and it provided a refreshing kick off to this year’s festivities.  Now, because of the float, I didn’t get to see every band but hey, I had tons of fun and got to see most of who I came out for.  Grab your swim trunks. Lightning Bolt and Zorch Just Went Kaplow

So last Wednesday was a real treat for me indeed.  Nothing epic or mind blowing, just some good ole fashioned noise music.  Some of it was just plain goofy, some of it was more progressive, and the rest was mega heavy.  Yup, I rolled over to Emo’s East to check out the tastiness that was Lightning Bolt, Zorch, and Kokomo.  Well not Kokomo so much, but that’s okay.  My ears rang a good day or two after the event and now I’m into buying a Lucha Libre mask.  Here’s why: Continue reading Lightning Bolt and Zorch Just Went Kaplow

Willie Nelson Was In The BackYard

So Saturday was quite the day to keep the Summer Concert Series rolling. Willie Nelson showed up to the Backyard at Bee Cave, which was a first for me on both counts. The twist this time, was that we went with a big group of people who’ve seen the legend before. Good things and bad things came from it, but Willie’s silky smooth voice and kick ass country playing made it a night to remember. Continue reading Willie Nelson Was In The BackYard

Dirty Projectors Were Actually Pretty Clean

We are smack dab in the summer concert series and Thursday night kept it going strong.  It was back to Emo’s East, or Emo’s I guess what it is now, to see the almighty Dirty Projectors with a little appetizing sauce that was Wye Oak.  It was a truly indie night and the show helped clear the palette for what I’ve been through.  Im’ not saying it’s the turning point of the summer, but it definitely marks the spot where I’ve been musically.  All the bases are covered now except for rap, but that’s okay.  So how did they do?
